Heavy snowfall halts trekking in Khumbu, seven tourists rescued

Snow began falling in the upper belt of Khumbu after torrential rain, accumulating more than half a metre of snow in some high‑altitude spots, according to Chief District Officer Kaman Singh Thapa Magar. The weather prompted coordination among local officials, residents and police to relocate visitors to safer zones. Seven foreign tourists stranded near Imja Tse, also known as Island Peak, were rescued after the snowfall made further ascent hazardous. The tourists were identified as European nationals of Chinese origin, and local representatives assisted in moving them to a secure location. The Nepal Tourism Board noted that the trekking route from Dingboche through the Imja Valley to Chhukung links with the main Everest Base Camp trail. Island Peak stands at roughly 6,165 metres above sea level, making it a popular mountaineering target. Authorities have advised against further travel to higher elevations, issuing notices through Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality‑4. Ward Chairperson Laxman Adhikari urged trekkers to exercise caution given the deteriorating conditions. Officials reported that more than 1,200 tourists are currently in the Everest region, with their safety being continuously monitored by local agencies, police and other concerned bodies.
