Narayani flood hits Susta, 165 homes affected

Floodwaters from the Narayani River began entering Susta Village Municipality-5 on Friday. The water reached 165 homes in the area, with the initial impact felt in the Tharu Tol settlement. Local officials confirmed that the rising water levels have placed a significant number of residents at risk of displacement and property damage. Police Superintendent Govind Bahadur Khati of the Armed Police Force base camp in Susta said 78 families were moved to a holding centre on Friday afternoon. As the flood spread to other settlements, an additional 85 households were relocated to safe areas. He noted that preparations are underway to move more people to the opposite bank if the water level continues to rise. Measurements taken at 7:00 AM on Saturday showed the river's flow at the Gandak barrage reached 267,000 cubic metres per second. Ward member Adam Khan explained that the river changed its course towards Susta. He stated that when the flow reaches approximately 100,000 cubic metres per second, floodwaters typically enter the settlements. Local resident Babu Khan pointed out that the river has eroded the remaining 132-metre section of an embankment under construction. He said the Indian side stopped work on this structure, which has allowed the river to cut closer to the residential area. The flooding has also caused damage to sugarcane crops in the vicinity. Chief District Officer Deepak Raj Nepal stated that security teams are on standby to rescue families if necessary. He confirmed that the situation is being monitored closely due to the continuous rise in water levels. The authorities are coordinating with local police and community members to ensure the safety of those in high-risk zones.
