Software and content licences

WeNepal credits the work it builds on. This page explains how our technology is licensed and lists the licences for the third-party material that appears in our stories, cards and videos. In this page "WeNepal", "we" and "us" mean the publisher that operates wenepal.com and the WeNepal app.

The software that runs WeNepal (the website, the newsroom engine, the editors' desk and the mobile app) is provided by Lacspace, WeNepal's technology provider, under a licence agreement between WeNepal and Lacspace.

• Lacspace provides technology infrastructure only. It is not the owner or the publisher of WeNepal and takes no part in editorial decisions. WeNepal is an independent news platform and is responsible for everything it publishes.
• On our pages, apps and videos this relationship is credited as: "Technology infrastructure: Powered by Lacspace".
• Using WeNepal gives you no licence to the platform software. You may not copy, modify, decompile or reverse-engineer it, except as the law expressly allows.

WeNepal runs on a modern technology stack. Lacspace's own software packages are used under the Lacspace Free Licence (LFL) 1.0, a permissive licence that allows use, modification and redistribution provided the copyright and licence notice travels with the software. Other open-source components are used under their own licences, and their notices are kept with the software we distribute.

For security reasons we do not publish a list of the systems, services and vendors behind WeNepal. A rights holder with a licensing question can write to legal@wenepal.com.

The fonts are self-hosted; their licence files are kept with the font files.

The music beds in WeNepal videos are by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0), creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0. The excerpts are shortened, faded and mixed under the voice, which CC BY 4.0 allows. Each video description carries the credit for the track it uses. The credits, in the author's requested wording:

The idents, stings and transition sounds in our videos are synthesised by WeNepal.

We never take photos from news sites. Photographs on WeNepal come from two licensed sources and are credited where they appear:

• Wikimedia Commons. Photos of public figures, places and events, used only under free licences: CC0, public domain, CC BY 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 4.0, and CC BY-SA 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 4.0. Each photo is credited with its author, its licence and a link to its Commons page, and is used under the licence stated there. Where a licence is ShareAlike, our edits to that photo (such as cropping) are shared under the same licence.
• Pexels. Stock photos used under the Pexels licence, which allows free use and editing. We credit the photographer ("Photo: name / Pexels") even though the licence does not require it, and we follow its restrictions: we do not sell unaltered copies, and we do not use a photo to suggest that a person in it endorses anything or to show them in a false light.

A photo may illustrate the subject of a story rather than the exact event; the caption and credit say what it shows.

The voice-over in WeNepal videos is synthetic. It is generated with a neural text-to-speech service, and it is labelled "AI voice" on the video's end card, "Voice: AI-generated" in the description, and as synthetic media where a platform offers that disclosure. It is a stock synthetic voice, not a clone of any real person's voice.

• Exchange rates: Nepal Rastra Bank's published foreign exchange rates, credited on screen.
• Weather: forecast data from Open-Meteo, used under its attribution licence (CC BY 4.0) and credited on screen.
• Dates: Bikram Sambat conversion uses our own date tools; public holidays are shown only from the government's official notice.
• Market figures, official statistics and documents in stories are credited to their source in the story.

Google Play and the Google Play logo are trademarks of Google LLC. App Store and the Apple logo are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. The badges are used under the owners' guidelines. Other names and marks belong to their owners and are used only to identify them.
