Advertising and sponsored content policy

Advertising and sponsorship help pay for WeNepal. They never buy coverage. This policy binds WeNepal's staff and every advertiser and sponsor, and forms part of every booking. Formats and how to book are on the Advertise page. In this page "WeNepal", "we" and "us" mean the publisher that operates the service.

• Advertisers and sponsors have no say in what we report, how we report it, or when. They do not see stories before publication and cannot ask for a story to be changed, delayed or removed.
• Advertising and sponsorship are sold by staff who do not decide editorial coverage.
• Nobody can buy a placement next to a particular story or topic.
• If a story concerns an advertiser or sponsor, it is reported as it would be about anyone else, and the relationship is disclosed in the story when relevant.
• Our technology provider has no advertising or editorial role; when a story touches our technology provider or its clients, a second editor reviews it.

• Every advertisement carries the label "Advertisement".
• Every sponsored item carries the label "Sponsored" at the top, a disclosure line naming the sponsor, a distinct muted design (never the Breaking style), and "#sponsored" on social posts. The label appears in structured data too.
• A sponsored Pulse edition says "presented by" the sponsor; the sponsor does not choose its stories.
• Sponsored content is written or approved by a person at WeNepal. It is never generated by the newsroom engine on its own and never carries an "Auto-published" label.

• Political advertising of any kind, including by parties, candidates, their supporters, and issue campaigns during elections.
• Advertising or sponsorship in the Politics category or in election coverage.
• Ads on sensitive stories: deaths, violence, court cases, communal tension, health emergencies, or anything involving minors.
• Ads that are misleading, unlawful, hateful or discriminatory; that promote gambling, tobacco, alcohol or weapons in breach of the law; that make unsupported health or financial claims (including "guaranteed returns"); or that imitate news stories, WeNepal's design or system messages.
• Ads with autoplay sound, pop-ups that block reading, or code that collects reader data without consent.

All creative must comply with the law of Nepal, including the Advertisement (Regulation) Act 2076 (2019) and sector rules on financial, health, alcohol and tobacco promotion. The advertiser is responsible for its claims and for having the rights to everything in its creative.

We may refuse, pause or remove any advertisement or sponsored item at any time for editorial, legal or reputational reasons. If we do so for a reason that is not the advertiser's fault, we refund the unused portion.

• Ads on WeNepal are placed by page, section and edition, not by who you are.
• We do not share reader names, contact details, lists or identities with advertisers or sponsors. Sponsors receive aggregate reports only (for example total reach of a Pulse edition), never figures we have not measured.
• We do not set advertising cookies today. If an ad partner ever needs them, they will be off until you allow them; see the cookie policy.

We only quote audience numbers that we have actually measured, and we tell advertisers how they were measured. We never inflate or estimate figures to sell advertising.
