Accessibility statement

The accessibility standard WeNepal works to, what we have done, the known gaps, and how to tell us about a barrier.

WeNepal should be usable by everyone who wants to read the news, in Nepali and English, whatever device, connection or assistive technology they use. This statement covers wenepal.com. The WeNepal app follows the same principles and is covered in the app's own settings and help.

Our standard

We work to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA. The site has not yet been independently audited against that standard, so we do not claim full conformance. This statement lists what we have done and the gaps we know about.

What we have done

  • Keyboard and screen readers. Skip links to the content and the navigation, a visible focus ring on every interactive element, landmarks (header, navigation, main, footer) and a logical heading order.
  • Both languages. Nepali pages are marked with the Nepali language so screen readers use the right voice. Devanagari text is set in Mukta with a line height of 1.7 so matras and conjuncts do not collide.
  • Contrast and themes. Colours are chosen for at least 4.5:1 contrast for body text, with light and dark themes that follow your device setting.
  • Text size. Pages reflow when you zoom to 200 per cent or use a larger default text size; we do not block pinch-zoom.
  • Motion. Animations and video previews stop when your device asks for reduced motion. Videos never autoplay with sound.
  • Video. Our news videos have burned-in captions, and caption files are served as WebVTT where the player supports them. The voice-over is labelled "AI voice".
  • Images. Informative images have text alternatives; decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
  • Layout stability. Advertising slots, where shown, have reserved heights so the page does not jump while you read.
  • Plain language. Stories are written for a reader with eight years of schooling, with short summaries and bullet points.

Known gaps

  • Some charts in the Promise Tracker and data stories may not yet have a full text or table alternative.
  • Caption quality in videos depends on automatic word timing and may occasionally be out of step.
  • Some older or partner-supplied PDFs and documents we link to are not under our control and may not be accessible.
  • The site has not yet been tested with every screen reader and Nepali text-to-speech combination.

We track these gaps and fix them as part of our normal work.
