Narayani River approaches danger level as Gandak Barrage gates fully opened

The water level in the Narayani River rose to 8.98 metres at 3 pm on Saturday, according to the Devghat Hydrometer Center. The centre defines 9 metres as the danger level and 7.3 metres as the warning level, which the river exceeded on Friday night. Chief District Officer Jagadishwar Upadhyay said officials are relocating people living along the riverbanks. He identified Gaindakot, Devchuli, Kawasoti, Madhyabindu and Binayi Triveni Rural Municipality as especially vulnerable to flooding from the Narayani River. Upadhyay also warned that Boudikali and Bulingtar Rural Municipalities are at risk of floods and landslides from the Kaligandaki River. He noted that district security agencies have been placed on high alert to support rescue and relief efforts. All 36 gates of the Gandak Barrage at Triveni in Nawalpur have been opened following the rise in water flow. The Area Police Office in Triveni put the discharge at 300,400 cusecs, above the 300,000-cusec warning level. The increased flow has halted water supply to canals serving both Nepal and India. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and move affected residents to safer locations.
