Madhyapur Thimi in Bhaktapur marked the annual cultural procession known as Kha Jatra on Thursday, coinciding with Ekadashi during the bright fortnight of Ashoj. Cultural expert and community leader Shyamakaji Pama Shrestha stated that the event commemorates martial arts and weaponry from the Malla period. Items including shields, swords, and armor were brought out from the deity house of Taleju Bhawani located at the historic palace grounds for the celebration. The procession follows traditional routes divided into upper and lower paths through the town. According to participants, the upper route passed through Inayatol and Duipokhari towards Digu Bhairav, while the lower route moved through Dathutol towards Balakumari. The procession incorporated royal scepters, items kept within the courtyard, and ceremonial offerings prepared during earlier days of the festival period. Festivities began on Ghatasthapana with the placement of sacred barley shoots at the Taleju temple inside the palace. Rituals included blowing trumpets, playing traditional instruments, and the participation of community elders, designated leaders, and priests. A pumpkin worshipped since Dashami was subsequently cut near Balakumari, drawing crowds of spectators who gathered to observe the traditional customs. Beliefs surrounding the festival suggest that consuming the ritually cut pumpkin as prasada helps ward off illnesses. The celebration highlights cultural heritage through historical battle displays, traditional attire, and community participation across various neighborhoods in Bhaktapur.
