In short

  • China exported 6,165 tonnes of rare earth permanent magnets globally during September.
  • Exports of rare earth permanent magnets to the United States grew by 18 percent in September.
  • Beijing previously introduced controls on seven rare earth elements and magnets in April last year.

China recorded a rise in exports of rare earth permanent magnets during September, with total foreign shipments reaching 6,165 tonnes for the month. The increase in trade volume was reflected across several major foreign destinations, including growth in deliveries heading to the European Union. Shipments bound for the United States expanded by 18 percent in September compared to August figures. The trade movement comes after Beijing enacted export restrictions in April last year that restricted seven specific rare earth elements as well as permanent magnet products. Those earlier regulatory steps were launched following the introduction of Liberation Day tariffs on Chinese products by US President Donald Trump. Rare earth permanent magnets play a crucial role in manufacturing, serving as vital components in electric vehicles and other technological applications. The latest export activity occurred alongside wider international commercial discussions, including trade negotiations held with Brussels.
