More than 50,000 people in Nepal are affected by strokes every year, according to Dr Poudel. A stroke occurs when blood flow to a section of the brain is interrupted, depriving it of oxygen and essential nutrients. When blood vessels become blocked, the brain loses functional control. Internationally, 1 crore 20 lakh (12 million) individuals suffer from strokes each year, and half of all affected patients globally die as a result. In Nepal, current figures show that 15 to 20 percent of individuals who experience a stroke die from the condition. Dr Poudel stated that one-third of stroke patients lose their lives prematurely due to the medical emergency. He urged the government to give priority attention to the issue to prevent the public health challenge from becoming more alarming. The Nepal Stroke Association was set up in 2017 to analyze the state of stroke occurrences in the country and to explore effective treatment measures. Since its formation, the organization has been conducting various awareness programs. Dr Poudel highlighted that international standards and protocols are being determined and implemented for the medical management of stroke patients.
