In short

  • Retail prices for staple goods like rice and oil rose by 10 to 15 per cent recently.
  • Garment prices increased by 15 to 20 per cent compared to the previous year.
  • Apparel cost increases are driven by higher transport expenses and the US dollar rate.

Consumers in the market are encountering severe financial difficulties while attempting to purchase daily essentials for upcoming festival celebrations. The rising demand for standard household items such as rice, lentils, edible oil, vegetables, meat, fruits, and clothing has pushed market rates upward, straining family finances across the capital. According to the general secretary of the Nepal Retailers Association, Amul Kazi Tuladhar, the retail prices for staple consumer goods including rice and cooking oil have climbed by 10 to 15 per cent over the course of the preceding one to two months. Meanwhile, the president of the Nepal National Traders Federation, Manoj Babu Shrestha, stated that garment prices have escalated by 15 to 20 per cent relative to the previous year. This clothing price surge is attributed primarily to the appreciating US dollar exchange rate alongside heightened transportation expenses.
