In short

  • A GLOF at Shintapu Tsho triggered heavy flooding along the Mochhu on 29 October 2026.
  • The floodwaters swept away a Bailey bridge in Punakha and damaged two key roads in Gasa.
  • Authorities placed Assam's Dhubri and Kokrajhar districts on high alert following the event.

A glacial lake outburst flood occurred at Shintapu Tsho on Thursday night, 29 October 2026. The water surge originated in the Laya area within northwestern Bhutan's Gasa district, creating substantial floodwaters that moved along the Mochhu. Disaster management officials reported that the torrent damaged public infrastructure across two districts. The disaster inflicted serious harm on transport networks and public amenities in the affected northern areas. Two major roads in Gasa district suffered damage, while the Gasa Tsachu hot springs, a popular regional attraction, sustained widespread destruction. Downstream in Punakha district, the rising water destroyed and swept away a Bailey bridge. The surge prompted safety measures across international boundaries due to shared river systems. Following the outburst in Bhutan, authorities placed vulnerable revenue circles in the Dhubri and Kokrajhar districts of Assam on high alert to monitor rising water levels and prepare for downstream consequences.
