In short

  • Bangladesh's wage board agreed to a revised garment pay structure starting in December.
  • Workers demand their monthly minimum wage increase from 12,500 taka to 30,000 taka.
  • Protests over compensation have entered their fifth day and disrupted apparel production.

A newly formed wage board in Bangladesh reached an agreement on Wednesday to establish a revised remuneration structure for garment employees beginning in December. The decision comes as demonstrations over compensation entered a fifth consecutive day, impacting manufacturing operations across the nation's vital apparel industry. Representatives stated that subsequent discussions will settle the exact financial adjustments. Babul Akter, serving as the workers' representative on the board, confirmed that the updated remuneration framework will take effect in December, with employees scheduled to collect their initial payments under the revised scale in January. The board did not deliberate on the specific magnitude of any compensation adjustments during its initial session. Protesting personnel are insisting that the monthly baseline compensation be elevated to 30,000 taka, equivalent to $242, moving up from the current 12,500 taka. Demonstrators explained that escalating expenses for nourishment, housing, and commuting have severely diminished their financial purchasing capacity amid ongoing industrial unrest.
