In short

  • Floodwaters damaged 1.15 kilometres of embankment on the Chitwan side of the Narayani River.
  • Only 20 kilometres of the 35-kilometre stretch from Narayani Bridge to Golaghat has protective barriers.
  • Downstream in Nawalparasi, just nine kilometres of the 98-kilometre river stretch has embankments.

High waters on the Narayani River have destroyed approximately 1.15 kilometres of protective embankment on the Chitwan side. The destruction occurred along a 35-kilometre section of the river that runs westward from the Narayani Bridge to Golaghat in Bharatpur Metropolitan City. Out of this stretch, protective barriers have been built along only about 20 kilometres so far. The damage has raised concerns for nearby settlements, including Siddhiganesh, Majhuwa, Hirapur, Gareshwar, Ganjipur, and Katero. Floodwaters have caused extensive erosion in these areas. The lack of complete protective structures has left these local communities facing a higher risk of land loss as the river continues to cut into the banks. Meanwhile, downstream sections remain highly vulnerable to the river. Along the 98-kilometre stretch below the Narayani Bridge in Nawalparasi, only about nine kilometres of embankment have been built. This leaves the remaining vast sections of the riverbank without any artificial protection against ongoing river erosion.
