In short

  • The contract for the dam and powerhouse was terminated on 11 November 2025.
  • Patel-Raman JV had originally secured the agreement in January 2023.
  • International bidding was permitted because the contract exceeded Rs5 billion.

The Sunkoshi Marin Diversion Multipurpose Project has encountered fresh delays after the contract for constructing its powerhouse and dam was cancelled. This termination took place shortly before the scheduled opening of financial proposals submitted by shortlisted companies, pushing back the timeline for the national pride undertaking. Because the contract exceeded Rs5 billion, the project invited international bids. This threshold allowed foreign enterprises to participate through joint ventures with domestic partners under public procurement regulations. The initial agreement had been awarded to Patel-Raman JV in January 2023 for Rs14.07 billion. However, the contract was terminated on 11 November 2025 after a 15-day notice was issued. The action was taken because construction work on the dam, powerhouse, and associated structures failed to achieve adequate progress within the stipulated timeframe.
