A glacial lake outburst flood originated from Shintaphu Lake in Bhutan’s Gasa district on Thursday evening, according to reports. A sudden rise in the Mo Chhu River's water levels caused by the incident swept away structures and amenities at Gasa Tshachu, a popular natural hot spring in northwestern Bhutan. Reports indicate that Shintaphu Lake sits at the headwaters of the Mo Chhu River and is listed among seventeen glacial bodies in the country identified as potentially dangerous. The flooding also caused damage to a solar-powered irrigation lifting system installed earlier in the year within the Punakha area. The surge prompted flash-flood warnings across parts of West Bengal and Assam. According to reports, no casualties have been documented because the affected area had been evacuated prior to the arrival of the floodwaters.
