Night travel banned on Kanti Highway due to landslide risks

In short

  • Night travel on the Kanti Highway is restricted for two days due to landslide risks.
  • The District Administration Office in Makwanpur barred vehicles from operating between 5:00 pm and 5:00 am.
  • Assistant Chief District Officer Sheshakanta Poudel linked the continuous rainfall to cyclone Arnab.

Authorities have temporarily halted night-time vehicular movement along the Kanti Highway linking Makwanpur and Kathmandu. The restriction follows ongoing heavy rainfall that has heightened the danger of floods and landslides across the local area. The District Administration Office in Makwanpur enforced the travel ban for two days, covering the dates of 13 and 14 Kartik. Traffic is prohibited on the highway from 5:00 pm until 5:00 am each night. Assistant Chief District Officer Sheshakanta Poudel released a notice explaining that the measure aims to avert potential human casualties and property damage during the hazardous weather conditions. Officials have advised drivers and travellers to refrain from operating vehicles on the highway during the restricted hours. The persistent precipitation across the region is attributed to the impact of cyclone Arnab, which formed over the Bay of Bengal and triggered continuous downpours starting Thursday.
